Art

Intent

At Ripple Primary School, we are strong believers in the impact of Art and Design as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. We are proud to provide a safe, stimulating and inclusive learning environment where every member of our community is valued and respected. We strive to create and deliver a high-quality art and design curriculum that provides children with opportunities to develop and extend skills to express their individual interests and ideas. This approach allows pupils to think deeply about an area of learning in a topic before they move on to the next one, encouraging them to ask questions, discuss, communicate understanding, and revise their ideas.

High-quality art education at Ripple Primary School equips children with the skills to explore, experiment, create, and invent their own works of art while engaging, inspiring, and challenging them. We believe that providing opportunities to synthesize work is vital for their artistic growth. Pupils will become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art, craft, and design techniques. They will be able to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft, and design, and understand the historical and cultural development of various art forms.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art, craft, and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft, and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers, and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
  • Help students understand the importance of linking their artwork to other visual elements they have studied.
  • Encourage students to create artwork that reflects the ideas and plans they have developed.

We develop pupils' cultural capital through working alongside professional artists, designers, musicians, actors, and dancers, and take every opportunity we have to visit the brilliant arts venues London has to offer. Pupils' voice is valued, and we have established a cross-phase School Council, where children are spokespeople and designers of their own environment. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design, understanding how art has changed their landscape, culture, and history.
