Siblings

Did you know, younger children who regularly engage in reading with an older sibling or cousin:

  • are more likely to choose to read independently because of the enthusiasm created by reading with their sibling or cousin than those who do not?
  • make up to a third more progress in their reading skills than those who do not?
  • have a more positive attitude to reading because they look up to their older siblings as role models, and if they see them reading, so will they?

Does your older child or children read to your younger child or children?

Does your younger child read to an older sibling?

If you have just one child, can you ask an older cousin, a neighbour's child or a friend's child to act as a reading role-model for them?

We all know the value of parents reading to their child but the impact your older children can have on their younger sibling needs reflecting upon, too.
