Phonics: Mr Everingham

My name is Mr Everingham, known by most of you as "Mr E".

Having dreamed of being either a primary school teacher or a fish and chip shop owner since the age of seven, I have been teaching for over 20 years now across multiple boroughs in London and Thurrock and across EYFS, KS1 and KS2. I have been working with children since I was 15 years old (over 27 years now!!) and I have never been happier in my long career than I am now being part of your Ripple Community.

Since March 2024, I have been the Phonics Lead here at Ripple Primary School, tasked with introducing our wonderful new Phonics and Early Reading scheme, "Little Wandle: Letters & Sounds Revised", to our staff, pupils and parents. Little Wandle has been embraced by our school staff and enjoyed by our pupils, with great progress already seen so far! If you have any questions about Phonics, reading or anything else, and of you who know me well will know I am always happy to stop for a chat and help you and your child in any way I can. I have the pleasure of working across both sites, so if you don't see me at one site, I will more than likely be at the other!

Since 2018, I have also been responsible for overseeing the induction, mentoring and progression of Ripple's ECTs (Early Career Teachers) and supporting other colleagues in any way I can. I have been mentoring colleagues and student teachers since 2006 and it is one of my favourite parts of my job.

As a child, I had a speech problem and was taken out of mainstream education to attend a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school, and was unable to say my name clearly until the age of 10! I know how it feels to be talking to someone and the listener being unable to understand a single word that I am trying to say, so I have deep empathy with many of our diverse pupils who find themselves in this situation for one reason or another. However, I am an example that from a low achieving boy who couldn't be understood, anyone can go on to achieve their dreams and have a successful career and I am always happy to use this story to inspire others.
