Intent
At Ripple, we are passionate about creating a geography curriculum that stimulates interest, nurtures a sense of wonder, and encourages lifelong curiosity about the world as a necessity for developing engaged and knowledgeable students. Our intent of the curriculum in geography is to ensure that our students will be in a strong position to make sense of the world around them and to make a difference in this ever-changing world by the time they leave Ripple.
The curriculum is ambitious because it challenges students to frequently reflect on their own learning throughout Key Stage 1 and 2; this approach is part of the whole school’s emphasis on ‘metacognition’ – and ultimately will help students to develop their own awareness
of their place in the world. We aim to inspire our students to become thoughtful, globally and environmentally informed citizens of our community.
We follow, but not limited to, the Kapow scheme because it encourages:
• A strong focus on developing both geographical skills and knowledge.
• Critical thinking, with the ability to ask perceptive questions and explain and analyse evidence.
• The development of fieldwork skills across each year group.
• A deep interest and knowledge of pupils’ locality and how it differs from other areas of the world.
• A growing understanding of geographical concepts, terms and vocabulary.
