MFL: French

Intent

At Ripple we celebrate our achievements, differences and cultural diversity and teaching foreign languages will help celebrate the value of language across the school.

To ensure we provide the knowledge for all teachers to gain confidence in teaching French, we use Kapow Primary’s French scheme of work which aims to instill a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures in line with our mission statement.

We want pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French. We aim to give pupils a foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills to learning further languages, developing a strong understanding of the English language, facilitating future study and opening opportunities to study and work in other countries in the future.

The Kapow Primary’s French scheme of work supports pupils to meet the national curriculum end of Key stage 2 attainment targets, there are no Key stage 1 attainment targets for Languages, however at Ripple our EYFS and KS1 classes listen to songs in French, know basic greetings and have French displays in the corridor.

We also have subject specialist teachers who are allocated to LKS2 and UKS2 to teach French, however all classroom teachers are empowered and able to teach all lessons following the descriptive planning and videos we use from Kapow.
